Troubleshoot black screen or blank screen errors
It

and your PC will display a black or blank screen. Select the error
you’re experiencing from the list to learn what you can do to help fix
the issue.
I see a black screen before signing in to Windows 10
If
you experience a black or blank screen error after upgrading to Windows
10, and you haven't signed in yet, try the following actions:
Action 1: Check your connections
There might be a connection problem with your PC or display. Here are some things to try:
- If you’re using a desktop PC:
- See if your display is plugged in and turned on.
- If you have a TV connected to your PC, make sure it's turned on and set to the input for your PC.
- Try connecting to different video outputs on your PC. Sometimes a change in driver can cause the video to be sent to a different display adapter or output.
- If you have your own display adapter installed and connected to your display, try connecting your display to the built-in video on the motherboard.
- If you’re using a laptop or tablet:
- If it’s in a docking station, temporarily remove it.
- Check that the external monitor is turned on and plugged in.
- If you’re using multiple displays, try projecting video to a different monitor. Press the Windows logo key + P, select a display, and then press Enter.
Action 2: Remove or update third-party antivirus software
Some third-party antivirus software has been known
to cause black screens. Removing the software won’t leave your PC
unprotected because Windows Defender Antivirus will kick in if no other
antivirus software is running.
Action 3: Perform a clean boot of your PC
For more information about what a clean boot is and how to run it for your version of Windows, see How to perform a clean boot in Windows..
Action 4: See if your PC’s video card is supported by Windows 10
Note
If your PC won’t start in Safe Mode with Networking, follow the steps
for getting into Safe mode and select 3 or F3 to enable low-resolution
video instead. Customer may need to go to the OEM to check.
- Start your PC in Safe mode. Learn how
- In Safe mode, simultaneously press the Windows logo key + R, type MSinfo32.exe, and then select OK.
- In MSinfo32, under Components > Display, find the card model of your PC’s video card, and see if it’s compatible with Windows 10.
I see a black or blank screen after signing in to Windows 10
If you get to a log in screen and then your screen goes black or blank, try the following actions:
Action 1: Try a Windows Key sequence to wake the screen
If you have a keyboard connected, simultaneously
press the Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B. If you’re in tablet mode,
simultaneously press both the volume-up and volume-down buttons, three
times within 2 seconds.
If Windows is responsive, a short beep will sound and the screen will blink or dim while Windows attempts to refresh the screen.
Action 2: Reinstall your graphics card driver
- Start your PC in Safe mode.
- Select the search box on the taskbar, type device manager, and then select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapter.
- Press and hold (or right-click) the display adapter, and then select Uninstall > OK.
- Restart your PC.
Note
If Windows keeps attempting to install a failing driver, then use the Rolling back a device driver procedure in How to temporarily prevent a driver update from reinstalling in Windows 10
Action 3: Remove or update 3rd party anti-virus software
Some third-party antivirus software have been known
to cause black screens. Removing the software won’t leave your PC
unprotected, because Windows Defender Antivirus will kick in if no other
antivirus software is running.
Action 4: Perform a clean boot of your PC
I see a black screen with spinning dots
If
you see a black screen with dots moving in a small circular pattern
during startup, it generally means that the updates are finalizing. In
this case, there’s nothing you need to do except wait. However, if these
dots remain on the screen for too long after an update, try the
following actions:
Action 1: Restart your PC
One indication that you may need to restart your PC
is if there’s no hard drive activity. If the indicator light on your
hard drive, try to restart.
Action 2: Unplug unnecessary USB equipment.
Action 3: Perform a clean installation
I see a blank or black screen during setup or upgrade
If
a blank or black screen occurs during an upgrade or setup, there may be
a problem with a driver, and you may not have the option to roll back
the driver.
If you’re setting up Windows 10 on your PC for the
first time, you may need to obtain a video driver from your PC’s
manufacturer.
If you’re upgrading to Windows 10, you may need to
roll back to the previous version of Windows until a newer driver
becomes available.
- Start your PC in Safe mode.
- Select the Start button, then select Settings > Update & security > Recovery.
- Under Go back to Windows 8.1 , select Get Started.
